F.A.Q.

When I order, how will I receive my candles?

I offer free delivery within the Paris, TN city limits. Within a 30 mile radius from outside of the city limits, I will deliver for a $5 fee. I also offer shipping, which will be addressed in the next question.

Will you ship during summer or winter?

In short, yes. I carefully pack your order and insulate it to prevent your candle from melting. I will also only ship on a Monday or Tuesday to prevent your order from being caught in a warehouse or in a hot (or cold) truck during the weekend. Even though UPS shipments are insured, they do not reimburse for melted candles. Sweet Scents Candle Shop cannot be held liable for melted candles once they leave our premises.

How long does shipping take?

On average, ground shipping (which is also the cheapest!) takes 5-7 days to reach you, depending on your location. Often, orders can be received even earlier. If you need your order quickly, you can always select expedited shipping.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping costs are determined automatically online by the shipping weight and your location. I do not charge any "handling" charges on top of the shipping.

What is your refund/return policy?

  • If you have a defective product, return it to me and I will make you a new candle.
  • If your package is unopened and never burned, I will refund you 100%
  • I will not refund or allow a return if you do not like the scent or color.

What type of wax do you use?

I use EcoSoya soy wax for container candles and candle tarts. It is 100% soy. They are very clean candles which produce very little soot. I love the consistency of soy wax and believe that they make beautiful candles with excellent scent throws. I will also be using palm wax for some container candles. I love the natural crystallization that occurs in palm wax. They will be available in 12 oz. glass containers.

What type of wick do you use?

I use a 6'' (cotton) CD flat braided coreless wicks and German CD flat braided coreless wicks. They are designed to bend at the tip when burning, forcing the tip of the wick into the outer portion of the flame where it burns the hottest. This causes more complete combustion, resulting in less carbon and less smoking. This type of wick should be self-trimming, but keep the wick trimmed to 1/4" for best performance.

My candle is smoking or has black soot, why is this?

No candle is completely soot free, but soy candles create substantially less soot than paraffin. Make sure that you are not burning your candle in a draft. Any draft will make your candle flicker and smoke. Also ensure that there is enough air space around your candle.

Why has the wick moved?

Untrimmed wicks can veer off center, after extinguishing use a metal spoon to reposition the wick while the wax is still soft.

What is the burn rate/time for your candles?

The burn time for our 8 oz. container candle is 40-60 hours total, but that is highly dependent on the wick used. For some of our larger candles, with two wicks, the burn time will be lower. We keep a candle from every batch and test it, but accidents do happen and a wick/scent problem might make it past us. If you have a defective candle, return it to me and I'll make you a new one.

Are there any factors that affect the quality of my candle?

EcoSoya soy waxes require larger wick sizes than paraffin and burn more down than out allowing them to have longer burning periods. A general rule of thumb is to have a full burn pool ¼ to ½ inch deep, from side to side in about the same number of hours as the number of inches the diameter of the container is. For Example: An Apothecary jar with a diameter of 4 inches should achieve a burn pool depth of ¼ to ½ inch, side to side, within about 4 to 5 hours. Too large of a wick will produce deeper, quicker burn pools but may also cause sooting and short burn times. Keep wicks trimmed to ¼ inch. Double wicking or a larger wick is necessary when a single wick does not achieve a sufficient melt pool.

Any tips for burning the candle?

When it comes to soy candles, it is recommended that you give the candle a  "memory burn." Which means that for every inch in diameter of your container, that you should burn the candle for one hour. Our 8 oz. quilted container jars are 2.5 inches in diameter, so you should burn it for the first time for 2.5 hours to establish a full melt pool , which increases the scent throw. If you skip this step, the candle will "core down" or "tunnel" and you will not achieve a proper scent throw. At the same time, the maximum burn time (per use)  for a container candle is an hour per inch in diameter of the container.
